It’s time to find out the truth behind the preparations and spending for the country’s hosting of the 2019 SEA Games.
Former Vice President Jojo Binay has called for a congressional inquiry into the SEA Games management, including how the funds were used, almost a year after the regional sporting event was held in the country.
Binay sought the inquiry after the sports officials reportedly incurred a debt of P387 million to various suppliers for the county’s hosting of the 2019 SEA Games. The Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC), led by former Speaker Alan Cayetano, was the private entity that signed the contracts with concerned suppliers.
“Perhaps it is about time for Congress to resume its investigation into the preparations and management of SEA Games,” the former vice president said.
“It should ideally focus more sharply on the operations of the congressman’s foundation. How did it spend the P1.5 billion? How much did it actually earn from the event?” he said.
Binay said Congress earlier put on hold the public hearings in deference to the country’s hosting of the event. He said there are still questions about the alleged overpriced cauldron and other equipment for the games.
“But almost a year has gone by. Now would be the proper time to resume the hearings in light of these recent revelations by PSC and the still unanswered questions surrounding the allegedly overpriced cauldron, athletic gear and equipment,” he said.
