Senator Grace Poe has expressed dismay at House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano for calling senators “epal” for holding a hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise ahead of the House of Representatives.
In an interview over ANC’s “Headstart” Wednesday (February 26), Poe said name calling makes debate cheap.
“When I deal with counterparts from the House, at least me personally and I think many of my colleagues, we try to maintain a level of respect and decorum, because name calling cheapens the debate,” she said.
“And when you start name calling. kung gumagamit ka ng mga salitang ganun, ibig sabihin nawawalan ka ng basehan para sa tamang argumento,” the senator added.
Poe chairs the Senate public services committee which conducted the hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise on February 24.
On the same day, Cayetano slammed senators for supposedly sucking up to ABS-CBN through the hearing.
There’s no question yung iba nagmamalasakit lang. There’s no question there are solid supporters of ABS. But yung iba OA na e. Parang doomsday na ang ginagawa para lang makapagsipsip. Hindi yun ang proseso,” Cayetano said.
“Bakit nag-hearing ang Senate? Anong purpose? Parang nag-aattendance sa ABS-CBN. ‘Hello, I’m here, I’m for you.’ Kasi sabi nila it’s not for the franchise kasi hindi pa sila pwedeng mag-hearing sa franchise, nandito pa [sa House]. So what’s it for?” he added.
Cayetano said the House’s hearings on ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal bid might take place either in May or August.
