National Union of People’s Lawyers (NUPL) president Edre Olalia on Thursday (Dec. 3) expressed concerns over the government’s recent inhumane assaults against the families of leftist leaders.
“We were infinitely disturbed when we heard how a public functionary scoffed at the wake and burial of young mother Ina Nasino’s Baby River as a ‘telenovela,’ now just read a troll brazenly suggesting that young Amanda Echaniz and her one month old baby should both be ‘salvaged’ (extrajudicially killed), coupled with one government lawyer anomalously giving official legal justification for a group of soldiers posing and gloating over a young lifeless body of Jevilyn Cullamat with carefully lined-up weapons and materiel as supposed necessary and routinary ‘documentation’,” Olalia said in a statement.
Amanda is the daughter of slain slain National Democratic Front of the Philippines (NDFP) peace consultant Randall “Randy” Echanis.
She and her newly born son were taken by police in Cagayan last Wednesday (Dec. 2) and her one-month-old baby over charges of illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
Jevilyn is the youngest daughter of Bayan Muna Rep. Eufemia Cullamat and was killed during a military encounter in Surigao del Sur last Nov. 28.
“Have we been so blinded in our thought processes and totally lost our sense of humanity?” Olalia asked.
“How low and even evil have we sunk?” he added.
Olalia had earlier also called out Metro Manila Development Authority (MMDA) spokesperson Celine Pialago for scrutinizing the media coverage over the death River Nasino, the daughter of political prisoner Reina Mae Nasino.
