Maguindanao Rep. Esmael “Toto” Mangudadatu has appealed to feuding members of the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) to spare the civiliancommunities from their latest conflict.

In a statement on Sunday, Mangudadatu urged the two groups to peacefully settle their disagreement instead of resorting to armed conflict.

“I am appealing to our fellow brothers, especially to the BIFF, to lay down their weapons and think about the countless civilians that could be affected as they trade bullets,” said Mangudadatu.

Mangudadatu stressed that both groups should instead exercise sobriety and “engage in meaningful dialogues” where they can fully express their sentiments and arrive at an agreement.

“Decades long war hasn’t solved anything,” he said.

He expressed concern that the war in Maguindanao has become a “vicious cycle where sons took over the arms after their fathers and of their father’s father.”

“It is high time for BIFF to reintegrate themselves to society and lead fruitful, productive civilian lives like those of the decommissioned MILF members. They (BIFF) too can have the same privilege.”

The Mindanao solon said reports from the Philippine Army and police intelligence confirmed that an armed clash did happened between MILF and BIFF last Friday, October 4, along Sitio Tinolusan in Barangay Dasawao.

Seven MILF members and four BIFF fighters were killed after the armed encounter. Three more BIFF members were reportedly wounded.
