Senator Antonio Trillanes IV has his connections in the military to thank for his life amid death threats that supposedly come from President Rodrigo Duterte.
In an interview with Asia Times, Duterte said his “top level military ties” helped neutralize the “hits” ordered on him by the President.
Trillanes was a Navy lieutenant before entering politics.
He’s now one of Duterte’s outspoken critics, even accusing the President and his family of amassing undeclared wealth and involvement in the illegal drug trade.
Asked if he feels Duterte is afraid of him, Trillanes said: “I know for a fact that Duterte is a paranoid man. And that he knows also that my classmates at the [military] academy are now battalion commanders in the army. So these are some things that he might consider in his moves against me.”
