Imbitado ni Teo! Letter shows solons’ Euro trip was DOT’s doing
No less than Tourism Secretary Wanda Teo invited select lawmakers to go to Iceland and Norway in July, ostensibly to observe their practices in promoting gender awareness and development (GAD).
Teo’s participation was revealed in a letter obtained by Philstar.com.
In the June 16, 2017 letter, Teo said the trips to the Nordic countries was aimed at identifying “the gaps and inequalities in GAD policy implementation processes which may be addressed through legislation.”
“We aim to include applicable and doable transformative programs as we may gather during the undertaking,” Teo said. “In this regard, we would like to invite the Honorable Congressman and the other members of the House of Representatives to take part in this undertaking.”
The letter signed by Teo belied DOT’s earlier claim that the eight-day trip, which was supposed to start on July 14, was an initiative of the House of Representatives.
The lawmakers who were supposed to go on a trip were Reps. Ma. Carmen Zamora of Compostela Valley, Mark Aeron Sambar of the Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta party-list, Paolo Everardo Javier of Antique and Oscar Richard Garin Jr. of Iloilo.
Four House employees and five DOT officials were also supposed to join the lawmakers in Europe.
The trip was called off after The Philippine Star reported about it.
Based on the documents obtained by The Star, the round trip economy airfare for the trip cost P2.1 million for all the participants.
Teo said in the letter that the DOT will “provide for the economy and round trip international air tickets and daily substinence and daily allowance” of the lawmakers.
