Imee kinilig! Duterte calls critics of hero’s burial for Marcos as ‘fake’
President Rodrigo Duterte has called critics of his decision to bury the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani as “fake” for remaining in denial about his presidency and his tour of duty as a World War II soldier.
In a speech Friday night, Duterte said critics of the hero’s burial could not accept that Marcos was both a president and soldier and that by law, was qualified and entitled to be buried at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
“The law says who will be buried there in the Libingan ng mga Bayani. Who are the heroes? The soldiers, the President, you must be the president at one time or you are a soldier. On both counts, Marcos was a president, you cannot deny that. And ‘yung sabi nila na he was a bogus soldier. Well, sabi niya, tama, it’s fake,” he said.
“If your opinion is different from mine, my news is fake, yours is right. That, that’s what… We quarrel — You are fake. Why? Because you do not jive with what I believe in. You have to — If he was not a soldier, he was not a president then I would not have…,”he added.
In November 2016, Marcos was finally buried at the Libingan 26 years after he died in Hawaii after the Supreme Court upheld Duterte’s decision.
Duterte’s defense of her father elated Ilocos Norte Gov. Imee Marcos who was seated front and center at VIP table in the Davao City forum. RTVM footage showed Imee applauding the President’s pro-Marcos speech.
“Only Imee Marcos (supported me among all local government officials). Tapos sinasabihan nila kasi tinulungan ka ni — ng mga Marcos family, you allowed the burial of Marcos. Look, stupid….That was a decision I made before I met the Marcoses,” he said.
“It has created not an irritant but a deep-seated — ang Ilocanos of the North. Nasasaktan diyan sila. And only because we are not ready to admit. Itong mga ‘to mga denial. Look. They are ready to deny Marcos his honor. You know, if the Ilocanos would believe that Marcos was really their hero, let them have their hero, too,” he added.
