Impeachment threat

SPEAKER Feliciano Belmonte dismissed attempts to hale Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to impeachment court.  “I don’t see her being impeached by Congress,” Belmonte said in a text message.MST

Senator Francis Escudero said the House investigation of the Judicial Development Fund and the threats of impeachment by Liberal Party members may be regarded as a vendetta. MST

Escudero made the remark as court employees defended the JDF, saying the fund came from their hard work and benefited small employees of the judiciary, ” We feel the (impeachment threat) is meant to pressure the Chief Justice, to influence how she will decide on their case,” said Judiciary Employees Association of the Philippines president Jojo Guerrero. Iloilo Rep. Niel Tupas Jr., chairman of the House committee on justice, launched a probe of the JDF, which he described as the judiciary’s pork barrel. Several lawmakers said Sereno could be held accountable for corrupt practices and betrayal of public trust in connection with the JDF after the Chief Justice declined to appear in the Tupas-led inquiry into the fund.
