Marino Party-list group is pushing for an institutionalized livelihood assistance for residents displaced by the phreatic explosion of Taal Volcano last Sunday.
Marino Party-list Rep. Carlo Lisandro Gonzalez said aside from fast-tracking the passage Department of Disaster Resilience bill, the national government needs ensure that livelihood assistance for calamity victims is included as one of the key provisions of its rehabilitation program.
“We have to consider not just the physical safety of our people, but also how we can assist them to stand back on their own feet,” said Gonzalez.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Alert Level 4 for Taal Volcano on Sunday evening, signifying that an eruption is “imminent.”
Gonzalez stressed although relief aid continues to pour for the residents affected by the seismic activities of Taal, “a more systematic way of dealing with disasters” is needed for both natural and man-made tragedies.
“I think it’s time we offer a more concrete solution to people unwilling to leave due to their livelihood and give them alternatives. Not only will it increase cooperation with disaster resilience initiatives, it will also help us achieve the zero casualty goal we always aim for,” said Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said his group is ready to give assistance, as much as we can, to those affected by the volcanic eruption.
