Is Monsour del Rosario backing out from Senate race?

Makati City Rep. Monsour del Rosario has decided to postpone the filing of his certificate of candidacy (COC) for senator last Friday, fuelling speculations that he will instead run as vice mayor of the country’s financial district in the upcoming 2019 midterm polls.

Del Rosario’s office made an announcement last Thursday that the former action star will file his COC for senator at the main office of the Commission on Elections in Manila around 2 to 3 p.m. of October 12.

Around lunch of Friday when the solon’s media officer issued an advisory on House Media’s Viber group that Del Rosario’s filing of candidacy will not push through as earlier planned on that day and instead will make an announcement in the coming week.

Del Rosario is one of the supposed seven senatorial bets that the ruling administration party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino – Lakas ng Bayan (PDP Laban) will be fielding for next year’s election.

Multiple sources confirmed to Politiko that Del Rosario is currently being wooed by the camp of former Makati City Mayor Junjun Binay as his potential running mate for next year’s midterm polls.

One of the sources stressed that Del Rosario was strongly considering to vie for the vice-mayoralty of Makati City instead of eyeing a Senate seat, considering that he has a bigger chance of winning if he becomes Binay’s running mate.

During an interview in Abante Tonite’s podcast “Abantelliling,” del Rosario confirmed that the camp of Binay has been urging him to be the former mayor’s running mate in next year’s midterm elections.

“At the same time, nabalitaan naming na kinuha ako ni Mayor Junjun Binay na maging running mate niya for vice mayor of Makati. So masarap ang pinagaagawan,” said Del Rosario.
