Political strategist Malou Tiquia has scored Vice President Leni Robredo for calling on Congress to pass a law regulating social media.

In a tweet posted Friday (March 22), Tiquia said moves to censor speech and weaponize the internet is akin to what someone working at Rappler would do.

“How can you regulate social media when: 1) you dont own it; 2) it has no political boundaries; 3) it does not recognize a single government. Now, if you want to censor speech and weaponize the internet and democracy, you should probably join Rappler,” she said.

In an interview in Pangasinan Wednesday (March 20), Robredo urged Congress to pass a law regulating social media because it could be used to spread fake news.

“Ako, kailangan talaga iyong Kongreso magpasa ng mga batas na kahit paano may control saka regulation iyong mga post sa social media. Kailangan iyong mga social media networks gaya ng Facebook, ng Instagram, ng You—pati nga YouTube—kailangan magkaroon ng regulation,” she said.

Robredo clarified in a statement released Thursday (March 21) that she supports freedom of expression but steps should be made to fight fake news, which is often spread online.
