It’s down to 13! Find out who wants to succeed De Castro as Chief Justice
Thirteen candidates will vie for a vacant Supreme Court (SC) seat vacated by Chief Justice Teresita Leonardo de Castro.
The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) revealed on Tuesday (Oct. 9) that these candidates are Court of Appeals (CA) Justices Oscar Badelles, Manuel Barrios, Apolinario Bruselas, Jr., Rosmari Carandang, Stephen Cruz, Edgardo Delos Santos, Japar Dimaampao, Ramon Garcia, Ramon Paul Hernando, and Amy Lazaro-Javier; Sandiganbayan Justice Alex Quiroz; and former Ateneo Law dean Ceasar Villanueva and lawyer Rita Linda Jimeno.
The JBC advised the public that it “may submit a sworn complaint, report, or opposition against any of the aforesaid candidates.”
Meanwhile, the JBC said Jimeno and Quiroz are set to undergo public interview this Oct. 18.
On the other hand, the JBC said the previous interview of rest remain valid.
The seat was vacated after De Castro took over as chief justice on August 28.
President Rodrigo Duterte picked her to the post last August 25 after the SC affirmed on June 19 its decision to grant the quo warranto petition against ousted chief justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
The quo warranto sought to invalidate Sereno’s 2012 appointment as chief justice for having failed to comply with the requirements set by the JBC when she applied for the post.
