Former ABS-CBN reporter Gilbert Remulla is calling out journalists over their apparent conflicting positions on libel.
Remulla took to Twitter to point out that journalists never denounced the libel case filed by then President Cory Aquino against Philippine Star columnist Louie Beltran as the death of press freedom.
The former Cavite lawmaker made the comment after some journalists described the conviction of Rappler boss Maria Ressa for cyber libel as a blow to the country’s media freedom.
“When Cory Aquino, as president, successfully sued Louie Beltran for libel, I don’t recall anyone in the media calling it the ‘death of press freedom’ or the ‘death of democracy,'” Remulla tweeted.
“Of course, she was an Aquino,” said the former tv reporter.
Ressa was recently found guilty of cyber libel over a story allegedly linking a businessman to illegal drugs and human trafficking.
