Two of Senator Juan Ponce Enrile’s staunchest allies in the Senate have appealed to the Sandiganbayan to allow him to be placed under house arrest due to his advanced age and frail health.
Senators Juan Victor “JV” Ejercito and Vicente Sotto III expressed support for proposals to put Enrile under house arrest following his sudden confinement at the Makati Medical Center before dawn on Thursday due to pneumonia.
“For humanitarian considerations, JPE (Enrile’s initials) should be allowed house arrest. At that advance age and condition, he needs proper care at home,” Ejercito said.
Prior to his latest medical emergency, Enrile has been detained at the Philippine National Police General Hospital in connection with the graft and plunder charges filed against him over the pork barrel scam.
Former President Fidel Ramos, one of Enrile’s friends, said the senator has been battling an infection since Tuesday and has been in isolation at the PNP General Hospital.
Authorities said they were prompted to transfer Enrile immediately to Makati Medical Center as he was already coughing out blood.
