Kahit driver, wag lang foreigner! Duterte lashes out at Omidyar-owned, tax-dodging Rappler
President Rodrigo Duterte said he can live with ordinary Filipinos cursing him but not tax-dodging, foreign-funded media firms like Rappler.
“If media demands that I step down, I will step down. But only accredited, legitimate, tax-paying, non… Hindi kasali ‘yung… Iyan ang ayaw ko talaga sa lahat sabi ko,” said Duterte in an interview after voting in Davao City.
Duterte was referring to Rappler who was stripped of its corporation registration after the Securities and Exchange Commission ruled that it violated the constitutional ban on foreign ownership in media (Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar invested $1.5 million in Rapler) and charged with tax evasion.
“I can stomach a tricycle driver shouting sloganeerings at me. I will never bow down to any foreigner,” said Duterte.
