Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra wants to see a P100 million increase in the Bureau of Correction’s (BuCor) 2020 budget.
“We are hoping that the Congress will increase the appropriations for BuCor’s medical and communications equipment,” he said.
Guevarra was at the Senate on Wednesday (Nov. 20) to present the budget of the Department of Justice (DOJ) and its attached agencies including the BuCor.
The Secretary pointed out that the P4.1 billion the BuCor currently won’t be able to cover the medical and communications equipment.
A day before, Guevarra said he met with BuCor Director General Gerald Bantag to get the latest developments at the BuCor in preparation for the budget hearing.
Earlier, detained Sen. Leila De Lima sought for a Senate probe over the deaths of inmates at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City due to illnesses and lack of medical facilities.
