Vice President Leni Robredo urged the government Saturday (August 1) to listen to doctors’ call to place Metro Manila under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) for two weeks amid the continued rise in COVID-19 cases.

In a series of tweets, Robredo said the doctors’ appeal is a “distress call” as they’re overwhelmed by the number of COVID-19 patients.

“Our doctors are sending a distress call. They are asking govt for a timeout to recalibrate, restrategize, redirect our policies because our strategy and measures are not working. They are afraid they might be pushed into a situation where they must decide who lives and who dies,” she said.

“The points raised by our doctors have also been part of repeated calls for action, not only from our office, but from experts and even affected sectors. We need to listen, so that we can start rising from this crisis. The only way to get through this is to stand together,” Robredo added.

Several medical organizations have released a petition asking for Metro Manila to be reverted to ECQ from August 1 to 15 to give the government time to recalibrate its COVID-19 response.

Despite the continued rise in COVID-19 cases, however, President Rodrigo Duterte announced that Metro Manila will remain under General Community Quarantine (GCQ) from August 1 to 15.

GCQ is a looser form of quarantine than ECQ, which involved restricting the population’s movement, except for essential errands and work.
