Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra on Wednesday (Oct. 9) admitted it will be a challenge for Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) Director General Gerald Bantag to get rid of bribery at the New Bilibid Prison (NBP).
“So that’s the challenge that DG Bantag has to overcome,” the Secretary said.
Guevarra made this point after Bantag recently expressed dismay that drug lords at the national penitentiary continue their bribery attempts of his subordinates.
Bantag disclosed that though he has not experienced any bribe tries but the drug lords imprisoned at the NBP have not halted in trying to bribe BuCor personnel and officials.
“DG Bantag has personal knowledge of facts on the ground,” said Guevarra.
“I am sure that inmates with money will continue to buy convenience, luxury, and freedom to engage in nefarious activities while in detention,” he added.
