House Deputy Speaker Paolo Duterte has no intention of becoming the next leader of the House of Representatives once Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano steps down by late 2020, National Unity Party President (NUP) and Cavite Rep. Elpidio “Pidi” Barzaga said on Monday.
Barzaga defended President Duterte’s eldest son from rumors he was supposedly interested in the Speakership following his decision to join the National Unity Party (NUP), a growing power bloc in the Lower House.
“The way as I look at it, even Pulong doesn’t have the aspirations to be the Speaker of the House—the way we see him, the way he talk, the way he communicate to us,” said Barzaga.
But Barzaga admitted that as “in so far as politics is concerned, everything is still uncertain.”
Politiko earlier learned that Rep. Duterte’s decision to become an adopted member of NUP reportedly triggered mass defection of members from the ruling PDP Laban party,
Last week, a dozen members of President Duterte’s political entity decided to follow the Davao City solon in joining NUP.
President Duterte earlier vowed to resign if his son decides to seek the House leadership during his presidency.
