Kapit tuko! Rio wants to stay longer as DICT chief despite Honasan’s appointment
Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) acting Secretary Eliseo Rio isn’t ready to leave his post yet despite Senator Gregorio Honasan’s acceptance of President Rodrigo Duterte’s offer to head the agency.
In a text message to reporters Friday (November 9), Rio said he hoped he will be given a few more weeks in office to finalize the entry of the third telecommunications player.
“I would not understand why I have to be changed in midstream of a very important activity that would bring a significant improvement in the telecommunication industry. I see no urgency in Senator Honasan taking over, at least until I fully finish the job on the third telco,” he said.
The selection of the third telco is currently mired in controversy, with PT&T and Stream Telecom accusing DICT and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) of bending the bidding rules in favor of Davaoeño businessman Dennis Uy’s Mislatel Consortium.
Mislatel was named the provisional third telco player after PT&T and Stream Telecom were disqualified over their alleged failure to submit some of the required documents.
The two losing bidders have appealed their disqualification before the NTC.
There’s no word yet when Honasan will take over as DICT Secretary.
