CITY OF DANAO, Cebu – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte Carpio said she respects the decision of her aunt-in-law former Ombudsman Cochita Carpio Morales following her decision to sue Chinese President Xi Jinping before the International Criminal Court (ICC).

In a media interview following Hugpong ng Pagbabago’s (HNP) proclamation rally in Danao City, Cebu, Mayor Duterte stressed the no one was preventing the former Ombudsman from filing a complaint against Xi over China’s aggressive island-building activities in the South China Sea.

“Okay, that’s their right as a global citizen to write the ICC kung meron man silang complaints, whether it be on President Duterte or for other world leaders. Rights mo naman ‘yan as a citizen of the world,” she said.

On March 15, the former Ombudsman together with former Foreign Affairs Sec. Albert del Rosario and a group of fishermen filed a complaint against Xi before the international tribunal for crimes against humanity over environmental damage in the South China Sea.

The complaint was filed two days before the Philippines withdrawal from the ICC took effect on March 17.

Carpio-Morales and Del Rosario claimed the complaint against Beijing was still valid since it “occurred within the period when the Philippines was a state party to the Rome Statute.”

China is not a state party to the Rome Statute that established the ICC.

Meanwhile, the Davao City mayor has refused to air her legal insights being a lawyer on whether or not the said complaint filed by her aunt-in-law will prosper. Mayor Duterte’s husband Atty. Manases Carpio is the nephew of the former Ombudsman.
