Kasalanan ni Drilon, ng Congress! Cayetano says SEA Games budget is P2.5B short of what PHISGOC needed, delayed by 5 months
Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano is blaming Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon for the snafus in the hosting of the South East Asian Games.
Cayetano, who is head of the Philippine Southeast Asian Games Organizing Committee (PHISGOC), said the SEA Games hosting budget was P2.5 billion short of what he wanted to ensure a perfect event and was the unintended casualty in the delayed approval of the 2019 budget during the term of then Speaker Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“Nagugulat ako sa mga allegatos of corruption and inefficiency. It was Senator Drilon na naglipat ng pondo sa PSC (Philippine Sports Commission)…it was his proposal to take out P2.5 billion,” said Cayetano in an interview with reporters.
“Kung nagkukulang kami sa iba nating ano…we are not making excuses, but we submitted a budget we needed we didn’t get it. Na-late pa ng five months,” he added.
Cayetano and PHISGOC has P17 billion budget for the 12-day event – P9.5 billion for the New Clark City stadium, including the controversial P50 million cauldron, built by Bases Conversion and Development Authority; and P7.5 billion for the actual hosting of the games, of which P1.5 billion went to PHISGOC which spent it without any biddings. At this level, this is the most expensive international event in the country.
“Kung nakuha namin agad…2019 inaprub ang budget sa BCDA so on-time, lahat nang nasa Clark one-month ahead, kaya nagagamit na,” he said. He said PSC headed by Butch Ramirez was actually “having hard time balancing all these funds.”
