Kawawa Maynila! Duterte bans new reclamation projects in Manila Bay
President Rodrigo Duterte has ruled out new reclamation projects in Manila Bay, telling the private sector to wait for his successor before pushing through with their plans.
In his speech at the inauguration of Sangley Airport in Cavite Saturday (February 15), Duterte said the only reclamation projects he will allow in Manila Bay are those which will be undertaken by the government.
He cited environmental concerns as the reason for his aversion to reclamation projects.
“If I will do that, it will choke Manila. The entire Manila City would be environmentally at peril,” Duterte said. “So pag-aralan n’yo mabuti ‘yan in the next administration whoever gets to be the President of this country.”
“Manila is an old city and it will decay if you add so many things in front of Manila Bay. So ayaw ko,” he added.
Duterte said he placed the Philippine Reclamation Authority under his office after getting wind of reports about politikos lobbying for the approval of various reclamation projects.
“Yung Reclamation Authority kinuha ko because I heard that everybody was lobbying for it. And it came to my attention that every Tom, Dick and Harry in town was following-up. No, no reclamation. You wait until the next President,” he said.
