Kaya nag-retire na lang! Duterte: ABS-CBN let Gabby Lopez go because ‘nothing will happen’ to franchise renewal

Eugenio “Gabby” Lopez III was forced to retire as chairman of ABS-CBN Corporation because “nothing will happen” to the network’s bid to have its franchise renewed if he continued to be at its helm, President Rodrigo Duterte said Friday (August 3).

In a speech in Bukidnon, Duterte revealed that ABS-CBN sent an emissary to talk to him about renewing its franchise, which is due to expire in 2020.

Now, ABS-CBN, ‘yung franchise nila is due for renewal. Sige padala ng emissary kausapin ako. Pinaalis na nila si Gabby eh, kasi nila nothing will happen eh,” he said.

Lope retired in April after serving as ABS-CBN’s chairman for over two decades. He was replaced by his cousin, Mark Lopez.

Duterte said that while he will not talk to any representative from the company, he will also not intervene in its application for franchise renewal.

“Pero if I had my way, I will not give it back to you. Magnanakaw kayo eh. Niloloko ninyo ‘yung maliliit,” he said.

House Bill 4348, which seeks to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise for another 25 years, is still pending at the committee level at the House of Representatives.

Duterte slammed the network over its alleged refusal to air his political ads after he zoomed to the top of the surveys ahead of the May 2016 electioms.

“Tinanggap ‘yung two million ko, ang p***** i** niya, hindi lang man lumabas… Marami kami. Marami kami. Most of the congressman. Kasi — p***** i** itong ABS-CBN. F*** you,” he said.

Duterte said he has no qualms about lambasting rich people because of their attitude.

“Kaya binabastos ko kayo. Kayong mga mayaman? Talagang binabastos ko kayo kasi bastos kayo numero uno eh,” he said.
