Senator Panfilo Lacson bared that assassinated Tanauan City Mayor Antonio Halili has told him about a retired Philippine National Police (PNP) general who is out for his post.
Lacson, who is a longtime friend of the slain mayor, said this after being asked about the PNP’s possible lead on a high-ranking security official who butted heads with Halili over his land sale business.
He said it is right for the PNP to consider this general, who he also refused to name, as a possible person of interest in the investigation on Halili’s slay.
“Kung interview-hin man nila dating kasamahan ni Mayor Halili pati pamilya, sasabihin nila, confirm din, na may isang retired PNP general na pwede nilang i-pursue as a possible lead,” Lacson said.
Halili, known for conducting a walk of shame of drug suspects, was fatally shot Monday morning (July 2) during a city hall flag ceremony.
President Rodrigo Duterte has linked his death with his supposed involvement in drugs, contradicting the Malacañang’s earlier statement hailing Halili as an ally in the government’s war against drugs.
This claim has been refuted by Lacson and Halili’s family, who is asking that Duterte clear the mayor’s name.
