Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra expressed elation over the decision of a Quezon City Regional Trial Court (RTC) to convict rebel leaders Benito and Wilma Tiamzon for holding captive four soldiers in 1988.
“It’s a victory for the prosecution, so as SOJ I am happy about the outcome of the trial,” he stated on Friday (Nov. 27).
The concerns allegations that the communist rebels including the Tiamzons had held captive four soldiers in Maubon, Quezon.
On Friday, Quezon City RTC Judge Alfonzo Ruiz II found the couple guilty of kidnapping and serious illegal detention.
The magistrate sentenced the Tiamzons to reclusion perpetua and ordered them to pay damages totaling 225,000.
