Kumita na mga Lopez! Mike Defensor urges ABS-CBN: Use P3.2B ‘evaded’ taxes to help employees
Anakalusugan party-list Rep. Mike Defensor urged ABS-CBN Tuesday (July 14) to use the P3.4 billion the network allegedly saved from avoiding taxes to help employees who would be displaced by the loss of its franchise.
“The taxes that were evaded, P3.2 billion, are just taxes, not even earnings. It was enjoyed by the company for so many years. Now I think it’s time to return it to the employees,” he said in an interview over ANC’s “Headstart.”
Defensor said it was ABS-CBN’s duty to take care of its employees, even as he admitted that the prospect of massive job loss was “one of the hardest aspects” in his decision to vote against the network’s franchise application.
“If you really feel for the employees, you know there is so much money there. There are earnings where you can get from to help the employees while we’re trying to resolve everything, and not just to retrench them and take them out of the company,” he said.
Voting 70-11, the House legislative franchises committee denied ABS-CBN’s franchise application on July 10 due to its various alleged violations.
Critics of the network claim the network saved P3 billion in tax payments using various tax avoidance schemes.
