President Rodrigo Duterte has closed his doors on any prospect of visiting the United States (US), Malacañang said.

Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Duterte made the decision after the Department of Foreign Affairs delivered the notice of termination of the Philippines’ Visiting Forces Agreement to the US Embassy in Manila Tuesday.

“The President will not entertain any initiative coming from the US government to salvage the VFA, neither will he accept any official invitation to visit the United States,” said Panelo.

“All these actions are anchored on the policy of [Duterte] to chart an independent foreign policy with our foreign relations with other states being based on national interests and general welfare,” he added.

The President, according to Panelo, also believes the Philippines should strengthen its defense capabilities and should not rely on on any other country for it.
