Kung gusto may paraan: Binay says Aquino gov’t could’ve filed new Mamasapano cases
Had it really wanted to, the Aquino government could’ve still pressed charges against the killers of the Special Action Force’s (SAF) main assault team that took down Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli Bin Hir alias Marwan.
Thus, hinted opposition leader Vice President Jejomar Binay in a Radyo Ukay interview in Davao City Sunday along with members of his senatorial line up.
Earlier this month, Department of Justice (DOJ) Secretary Leila de Lima said that no charges can be filed in relation to the death for the nine police commandos who spearheaded the January 25 Mamasapano, Maguindanao siege since none of their killers could be identified.
De Lima, now an administration candidate for senator, said that there were no available witnesses. Thus, a case couldn’t be pursued.
Binay gave a different opinion, saying that the killers could be branded in the charge sheet as “John Does”.
Wala raw ho maipapangalan, unang-una ho pwede kang mag ‘John Doe.’ Yung lilipas ang panahon, wala nang maihahabol,” he noted.
“Kulang na kulang, ang malugkot nga, sila pa ngayon ang naihabla, insubordination pa ata ang pagkaka-charge sa kanila,” Binay said, lamenting the fate of the SAF operatives in the aftermath of the carnage.
A total of 44 SAF members died during the bungled mission. The DOJ was able to pursue cases against the 35 others who perished in the incident.
The head of the SAF at that time, Dir. Getulio Napeñas was sacked and treated as the scapegoat of the entire debacle. Napeñas would later join Binay’s senatorial ticket.
(Randy K. Ortega)
