Kung kaya ng US, tayo rin! Sotto: PH has right to ban Americans
The Philippines has every right to ban Americans from entering the country, just as the United States can choose who should enter its territory, Senate President Vicente “Tito” Sotto III said Thursday (January 2).
Sotto tweeted the remark a day after Malacañang confirmed the inclusion of US Senator Edward Markey in the list of American politikos banned from entering the Philippines for supporting calls for the release of Senator Leila De Lima.
Duterte earlier banned US Senators Richard Durbin and Patrick Leahy from setting foot in the Philippines for calling for De Lima’s release.
“The US as a sovereign nation is well within its rights to choose who comes to visit, as we do! Our nipa hut is also a castle!” Sotto said.
Durbin and Leahy were behind the inclusion of a provision in the US 2020 national budget banning Philippine officials involved in De Lima’s detention from entering the US.
De Lima has been detained at Camp Crame since 2017 over drug charges. She denies the allegations and calls it part of political persecution.
