Legal actions vs. ‘Ang Probinsyano’ tantamount to censorship, Gabriela warns

Garbiela party-list group has slammed the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) over its legal threat against primetime television program “Ang Probinsyano.”
In a statement, the party-list group said the pressure exerted by authorities against the Kapamilya television program was “tantamount to censorship.”
“This is censorship, as it amounts to creating prior restraint on the part of the producers in sustaining the storyline of the show,” the statement read.
The group warned allowing the demands being raised by the DILG and PNP will set a very dangerous precedent, as authorities will abuse legal actions to sanction shows and content that are inconsistent with its desired image of the law enforcers.
“The DILG is raising a howl over the portrayal of cops in the hit series but has never spoken strongly about criminal cops abusing women and the people in real life,” the statement read.
Gabriela stressed that instead of “dangling the whip on the show,” the DILG should instead pursue cases and convict cops who have been tagged in sex-for-freedom cases, rape, sexual harassment, extortion, extrajudicial killings and other criminals.
