Libre sumuporta! Palace shrugs off Catholic Church’s endorsement of senatorial bets
Malacañang couldn’t care less about the Catholic Church’s endorsement of certain senatorial candidates in the upcoming elections.
Presidential Spokesperson Salvador Panelo said Tuesday that the Philippines “is a free and democratic country” so everybody can endorse anyone running for public office.
In a statement, Panelo noted that endorsements could be based on a candidate’s platform, his alliance with the backer, or as investment for future favors.”
“Candidates normally welcome endorsements coming from influential persons or groups. In this case, we deem it best to leave the endorsement of the Church to the candidates themselves as to how they will look or treat the same,” he said.
Catholic and Christian lay leaders recently endorsed the candidacies of the entire “Otso Diretso” senatorial slate, as well as those of Senator Grace Poe and militant leader Neri Colmenares.
