Now it can be told. Gat Andres Bonifacio’s quest for reforms was one of the “inspirations” the ruling party, PDP-Laban, to push for federalism.
Although remembered primarily as a revolutionary, Senate President Koko Pimentel said that Bonifacio “aimed to reform the system from within at the beginning, when he joined La Liga Filipina.”
“Bonifacio was a reformist, radicalized by the systemic injustice of the Spanish colonial regime,” the Senate chief said on Thursday.
“But some of the problems Bonfacio faced still exists, even more than a hundred years after the Spanish colonial regime was overthrown,” he said.
For Pimentel, who is also president of the ruling party PDP Laban chaired by President Rodrigo Duterte, this is the reason why his party advocates systemic change through a shift to federalism.
