One of Senator Manny Pacquiao’s storied rivals in the ring plans to follow in his footsteps and become a politiko.
The Daily Mail reported that retired Mexican boxing champ Juan Manuel Marquez will be running for Congress in the June 2021 elections.
The United Kingdom-based publication quoted Marquez as saying that he was inspired by Pacquiao in his foray into politics.
“If he (Pacquiao) can do it in the Philippines, why can’t I do it here in the country?” the former world champion said.
Marquez praised his erstwhile rival as someone “who may be President of the Philippines because he has done well.”
The Mexican boxing legend faced off against Pacquiao in the ring four times, from 2004 to 2012. The Filipino boxing icon defeated his rival in the first three fights, but Marquez won in their last fight after knocking out Pacquiao in the sixth round.
