So long, Paeng! Gringo eyed as next DAR chief

Another senator is set to join the Cabinet as Secretary of Agrarian Reform.

Politiko has learned that Senator Gregorio “Gringo” Honasan II is being eyed as the next head of the Department of Agrarian Reform, replacing Secretary Rafael Mariano.

With his past as a former colonel and mutineer, Honasan fits President Rodrigo Duterte’s preference for government officials who have military or police backgrounds.

Working in Honasan’s favor is his expertise in security, environment and agrarian reform issues.

He served as chair of the Senate committee on agrarian reform from 2010 to 2016.

There’s a big chance Honasan will be appointed to the DAR since Mariano has been bypassed by the powerful Commission on Appointments (CA).

It remains to be seen if Mariano, a militant leader, will be confirmed by the CA given Duterte’s falling out with the Left.

Honasan has little to miss should he be immediately appointed to head the DAR since his third and last consecutive term in the Senate will end in 2019.
