President Rodrigo Duterte attended the wake of former Senate President Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel Jr. after cutting short his trip to Japan due to “unbearable pain” in his spinal column.

Upon his arrival at Villamor Air Base in Pasay City on Tuesday night, Duterte proceeded to visit Pimentel’s wake at Heritage Memorial Park in Taguig.

Accompanying the President was his long-time aide and now Senator Christopher Lawrence “Bong” Go.

They spent an hour and a half at the wake.

“Notwithstanding his trip to Japan being cut short due to a searing pain in the spinal pelvic area of his body, the President was able to endure the same and headed from Villamor Air Base in Pasay City to the wake of former Senate President Aquilino ‘Nene’ Pimentel, Jr., whom he considers as a personal friend and recognizes as having contributed valuable service to the country as a public servant, at the Heritage Park in Taguig to pay his last respects and condole with the latter’s loved ones,” Malacañang said Wednesday.

Pimentel, who was the founder of the country’s current ruling party Partido Demokratiko Pilipino–Lakas ng Bayan, passed away on Sunday morning at the age of 85 after a battle with lymphoma.
