He won’t buy their votes for P1 million each but he promised to all of them happy.
This is the campaign strategy of Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco who apparently has learned from the mistake of former Speaker Bebot Alvarez who gave zero budgets to House members who refused to toe the supermajority line at Batasan.
Alvarez was deposed as Speaker in spectacular fashion in last year’s State of the Nation Address as a big chunk of House members, most of whom got zero or heavily slashed budgets, voted to replace him with former President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo.
“My first promise to my colleagues, nobody will get a zero budget. My promise to my colleagues, I will not slash any budget that’s allotted to their districts,” said Velasco in an interview with ANC.
“I’m a district congressman, I know how important it is to have a budget for my district. Because each district has its own needs, so definitely I have to protect the budget of each district for each congressman,” he added.
Velasco and Alvarez are members of the Partido Demokratikong Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) and both are aggressively vying to be the next Speaker.
