Love your own! Roque confirms ‘Hugpong’ is Duterte’s party
President Rodrigo Duterte has chosen to be identified with the regional politic party established by his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte, rather than the ruling Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque on Monday (August 6) called Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) as Duterte’s party.
He made the announcement as he confirmed that he has taken an oath as a member of HNP.
“I am the Presidential Spokesperson and the President has said that ever since Hugpong is his party. So, I think it’s only right that I also join his party ‘no,” Roque said in a press briefing.
Roque said that while Duterte is PDP-Laban’s chairman, the President considers HNP as the party he belongs to.
Duterte founded a regional party, Hugpong ng Taong Lungsod, when he was mayor of Davao City.
Recalling the conversation he recently had with Duterte, Roque said: “I asked him, ‘Ano ba Hugpong ho?’ Ang sabi niya talaga—and I quoted him ‘no, ‘Ah, talagang iyan ang partido ko mula’t mula pa sa Davao. Pag ako ay tumatakbo noong Mayor’—23 years siya naging Mayor, ang partido niya talaga, partidong Hugpong.”
Sara has said that HNP will remain a regional party for now even though it is open to forge alliances with national political parties.
