Senator Bong Go is in favor of extending the enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) beyond April 30– but only in Metro Manila, which has the most number of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in the country.
Go, whose pronouncements reflect President Rodrigo Duterte’s stand, said in a video Monday (April 20) that the national government cannot let its guard down yet.
Go said the national government needs more time to assess if the curve of COVID-19 infections has been flattened, as he noted that the pace of mass testing is just starting to pick up.
The senator, who chairs the Senate committee on health, said restrictions may be eased in other parts of Luzon.
As of Monday, the Philippines has 6,459 confirmed COVID-19 cases and 428 deaths.
Duterte is meeting with healthcare experts in Malacañang as he weighs the pros and cons of extending or lifting the ECQ, which he declared in mid-March.
Palace officials said Duterte will decide on the possible lifting or extending of ECQ this week.
