Magbago kaya isip? Cabinet execs meet as doctors ask for Metro Manila’s return to ECQ
Cabinet officials are meeting Saturday night (August 1) to discuss the concerns of the medical community as doctors called for Metro Manila’s return to enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) for two weeks.
Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque identified the Cabinet officials at the meeting as Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, Budget Secretary Wendel Avisado, Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III, Interior Secretary Eduardo Ano and Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana.
Also present at the meeting were Senior Deputy Executive Secretary Michael Ong, Presidential Assistant for Foreign Affairs Robert Borje, National Task Force Chief Implementer Carlito Galvez, COVID-19 testing czar Vince Dizon, Health Undersecretary Leopoldo Vega and Senator Bong Go.
“This is to address the concerns of the medical community,” Roque said, adding that recommendations from the meeting will be submitted for President Rodrigo Duterte’s review.
Earlier in the day, representatives of several medical groups held a press conference to ask that Metro Manila be placed under ECQ for two weeks as the healthcare system is already overwhelmed by the COVID-19 crisis.
The medical groups cited healthcare workers getting ill and burned out as reasons for stricter lockdown measures to be imposed again in Metro Manila as COVID-19 cases continue to surge.
Duterte extended the general community quarantine in Metro Manila until August 15 despite the rising number of COVID-19 cases in the capital.
The Philippines reached a new all-time high Saturday as the Department of Health (DOH) recorded 4,963 new COVID-19 cases, bringing the total to 98,232.
