Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo on Monday urged Manila Bishop Broderick Pabillo to focus on prayer instead of meddling in politics.
Panelo was reacting to Pabillo’s opposition to the death penalty and concerns relating to the government’s insufficient response in controlling coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the country.
Quoting Pope John Paul II’s words, President Rodrigo Duterte’s lawyer said: “You are priests. You are not social and political leaders. Let us not be under the illusion that we are using the Gospel by an exaggerated interest into temporal problems.”
During his commentary show “Counterpoint” aired on state-run PTV-4, Panelo told Pabillo to spend time in prayer and encourage the faithful to observe health protection measures amid the Covid-19 crisis.
The Catholic prelate announced in July that he had tested positive for the virus.
