Senator Sherwin Gatchalian will summon officials of the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) to the Senate to explain the unusually high power bills they sent to their customers in June.
In a statement Friday (July 3), Gatchalian expressed dismay with Meralco for failing to explain satisfactorily why their customers’ power consumption skyrocketed when Metro Manila was placed under enhanced community quarantine (ECQ).
Meralco said customers’ June bill reflects their actual consumption during the two and a half month long ECQ, which started on March 16 and ended on May 31.
Several customers, however, have claimed they were billed more than what they consumed during the duration of ECQ.
“Noong huling pagdinig namin, talagang mahigpit na sinabi namin na importante na maintindihan ng tao kung ano yung binabayaran nila. Basic ‘yan,” said Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate energy committtee.
“Gustong magbayad ng tao pero gusto nilang maintindihan kung paano binabasa at kino-compute ang aktuwal na gamit nila ng kuryente. Pero napakahirap intindihin ng eksplanasyon ng Meralco,” he added.
Gatchalian said he has received more than 200 complaints over the so called “bill shock” caused by Meralco’s billing. He said the utility failed to respond to customers’ concerns.
