Mahal na ang masarap! Duterte wants to impose higher tax on sugar

Here’s one bitter news for Filipinos: President Rodrigo Duterte wants to impose higher tax on sugar.

In a speech in Malacañang Wednesday (June 14), Duterte said he will focus on collecting and raising sin taxes.

“Kung talagang hindi makabayad, wala man tayong magawa doon but I will go for sin taxes. I know that’s your favorite. We go for a higher dyan sa sugar,” he said.

Under the Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion Law passed last year, an excise tax of P6 per liter will be imposed on drinks containing caloric or non-caloric sweetener.

Meanwhile, drinks containing high-fructose corn syrup will be taxed P12 per liter.

Three-in-one coffee and milk are exempted from the tax.
