Mahirap nang magkahawaan! Guevarra justifies BuCor’s suspension of inmates’ visitation rights
Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra defended the decision of the Bureau of Corrections (BuCoR) to stop inmates from getting visitors.
“The BuCor move, like the suspension of classes for this week, is in line with the President’s proclamation of a state of public health emergency,” he explained.
The BuCor announced that it has suspended the visitation privileges of prisoners for one week starting March 11.
It explained it made the move after the Department of Health (DOH) raised the country’s status to Red Alert Sublevel 1 and President Rodrigo Duterte’s declaration of a publkic health emergency because of COVID-19.
“We all know about the overcrowding problem at the national penitentiary,” Guevarra said.
“Just one COVID-19 case inside will produce calamitous effects,” he added.
