KORONADAL CITY, South Cotabato – Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte is mulling over quitting her influential regional party Hugpong ng Pagbabago (HNP) after the midterm elections next month.

In an interview in Koronadal City on Tuesday, Mayor Duterte admitted that she thought the national campaign would be easy but has endured fatigue from the rigorous activities as Hugpong chairperson and campaign manager in recent weeks.

“Sa totoo lang, ngayon pa lang pinagiisapan ko na talaga na iwanan yung HNP kasi pagod na talaga ako sa ano (role) na ito sa elections,” she said.

The Presidential daughter admitted that she belittled the nationwide campaign trail, being a new player in national political scene.

“Akala ko madali lang, kasi sa Davao (region) naman kasi madaling kausap mga politicians. Pero kapag ganyan na pala ka-laki tapos iba-iba yung caracas ng mga tao, mahirap pala talaga siya,” she said.

“Sila naka tingin lang sa akin. Lahat sila nag-aantay sa akin,” she added.

She said the future of the regional political party remains uncertain even after the May 13 polls since she is still not in favor of elevating HNP’s status as a national political party contrary to the consensus of party leaders.

“Hindi ko alam, hindi ko alam kung ano ang mangyayari sa amin after (elections),” she said.

She earlier revealed that the results of the May 13 polls, particularly in the senatorial race, will be a “test case” for HNP whether or not to proceed to become a national political entity.

Up to nine senatorial candidates supported by HNP may enter the winning circle next month based on the survey conducted by Pulse Asia last March.
