Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad on Thursday said he expects a “smooth transition” of the new Bangsamoro autonomous region.

“I congratulated President (Rodrigo) Duterte on the success of the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law and the appointment of members into the Bangsamoro Transition Authority,” Mohamad said in a statement delivered in Malacañang.

“I look forward to the smooth transition of the Automous Region in Muslim Mindanao through the interim government of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region for Muslim Mindanao (BARMM),” he added.

The Prime Minister also stressed the need to strengthen the economic cooperation between Malaysia and the Philippines given the “vast economic potential” of the BARMM.

“I therefore assured Mr. President of Malaysia’s desire to continue to be of help in the development of Mindanao,” Mahathir said.
