President Rodrigo Duterte has declared the birthday of the Virgin Mary a holiday.
Duterte signed Republic Act 11370 on August 8, 2019 declaring September 8 a special working holiday.
“September 8 of every year is hereby declared a special working holiday in the entire country to commemorate the Feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary,” the law read.
Mother Mary’s birthday is the second national Marian holiday in the Philippines, a predominantly Catholic country.
In 2017, Duterte declared December 8 a holiday to mark the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.
