The House committee on legislative franchises isn’t keen on tackling ABS-CBN’s franchise renewal anytime soon despite calls from politikos, the public and even Malacañang.
Politiko found that the committee chaired by Palawan Rep. Franz “Chicoy” Alvarez will meet on Monday, February 24. However, it isn’t on the official calendar of committee meetings released by the House public relations and information bureau.
A source told Politiko that the 11 bills seeking to renew ABS-CBN’s franchise isn’t part of the agenda for the committee meeting. Franchise applications of other entities will be tackled instead.
The committee meeting will take place on the same day that the Senate committee on public services chaired by Senator Grace Poe will hold a hearing on ABS-CBN’s franchise.
House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano has cried foul over the Senate hearing, saying it is unconstitutional since franchise bills should be passed by the House first before the Senate acts on them.
Senators, however, said there is nothing wrong with the hearing set by Poe since it will tackle ABS-CBN’s existing franchise and not its application for renewal.
