The government has set aside nearly P2 billion in preparation for the onslaught of typhoon “Ompong,” President Rodrigo Duterte said Thursday.
“Bilyon ‘yan. Eh kanya-kanya bilyon eh. Closer to two billion,” Duterte said after the command conference on Ompong at NDRRMC operations center in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City.
The chief executive expressed satisfaction with the government’s readiness to respond to Ompong, which is projected to hit the Cagayan region on Saturday.
“Yes, I have been briefed and I said I just… I did away with my speech because it was all motherhood,” he said. “The nitty-gritty was already discussed so I could understand already the apparatus being placed there in the meantime waiting for the crisis to happen because every typhoon is always a crisis.”
Asked if he was willing to seek international aid, Duterte said, “Wala pa. It would depend on the severity of the crisis. If it flattens everything, maybe we need to have some help. And if there are countries who are well-meaning… Pero wala pa naman. It’s too early to speculate.”
