Marcos ‘reinstatement’ to have deep consequences, Lacson warns

The return to active duty of Superintendent Marvin Marcos and others linked to the killing of Albuera Mayor Rolando Espinosa last November may have deep consequences, Sen. Panfilo Lacson said Sunday.

Lacson, who headed the Philippine National Police from 1999 to 2001, said Marcos’ case will embolden rogue cops to demand field assignments.

“The Marcos case may have deeper implications. Police scalawags may now invoke his case as precedent and demand to be given field assignments,” he said in a tweet (

Marcos and his men were linked to the killing of Espinosa in a subprovincial jail last Nov. 5. At the time, they were in the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group Region 8.

An investigation by two Senate panels, one of which is headed by Lacson, found the killing of Espinosa was premeditated.

Despite this, Marcos is reportedly set to return to active duty this week, as head of the CIDG in Region 12.
